Beyond Competence: Cultivating Cultural Humility as a Lifelong Practice
In our work, we often hear about the goal of becoming “culturally competent.” But can anyone truly arrive at a finished destination of knowing everything about another human being’s lived experience?
True connection doesn’t start with mastery; it starts with curiosity and ongoing learning. This interactive session challenges participants to move away from the static idea of cultural competence—a term that suggests an endpoint—and embrace cultural humility as an active, lifelong posture.
Led by trauma-informed author, educator, and organizational coach Dr. Veirdre Jackson, this session goes beyond theory to offer meaningful self-reflection and practical workplace tools. Designed specifically for nonprofit and human services staff, you will explore how power dynamics, personal biases, and ongoing self-critique shape the care and advocacy we deliver to our communities every day.
