Greetings!
There’s so much momentum in our community right now. In recent weeks, we’ve seen nonprofit partners reach meaningful milestones through the opening of new facilities, expanded programs, and advocacy efforts that are driving real change.
As we move through May, we have an opportunity to carry that momentum forward by continuing to learn, connect, engage, and advocate alongside one another. Together, we can keep strengthening our shared impact across this region.
As always, this newsletter is powered by the work happening across our community. If you have an event or update to share, please send it to Nicole Engle to be included in next month’s edition.
Warmly,
Kristyn DiDominick
Executive Director

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities | Nearly 3.7 Million People at Risk of Losing Needed Rental Assistance to Harsh Time Limit and Work Requirement Proposal
… “Evidence from a range of economic and health security programs shows policies that take away assistance from people who can’t meet a work requirement or who hit an arbitrary time limit are ineffective at helping people find jobs and achieve stability and self-sufficiency. Rigorous research shows that time limits on rental assistance cause more people to become homeless compared to ongoing assistance. Imposing arbitrary time limits does nothing to tackle the root cause of housing instability that rental assistance addresses: the gap between housing costs and renters’ incomes.
Work requirements in SNAP and Medicaid have been found to take away assistance people need without increasing employment or earnings. Such restrictions fail to address the underlying barriers to finding adequate employment, such as lack of access to affordable child care and transportation. The unusually stringent 40-hour work requirement that HUD’s rule would permit would be nearly impossible for many workers to meet, since workers with low-paying jobs often have little control over their hours and only a small share are able to find jobs that guarantee 40 hours every week.[8] Better ways to enable and support work exist, including expanding child care assistance, strengthening the Earned Income Tax Credit, and promoting paid family and medical leave.” …

Stanford Social Innovation Review | The Four Principles of a Breathing Organization
“In human services, where stress is chronic and resources are perpetually scarce, the need for structured co-regulation is even greater than in corporate settings. The question isn’t whether to have rituals that shape nervous systems—every organization already has them. The question is whether those rituals are designed for sustainable coordination or extractive efficiency.” Read More!

Building Movement Project | Security to Wellbeing Framework: Practice Guide
This offering from the Building Movement Project is based on the Security to Wellbeing Framework, created by service providers for service providers. Its goal is to create a space for providers to reflect, assess, and step into social change work.
This reflects a culmination of years of work in partnership with direct service organizations, leading work in different parts of the US, and refined through the BMP Security to Wellbeing Cohort. It is composed of four key strategies:
- Theory of Social Change
- Internal Alignment
- Client Voice
- Community Action
These strategies can help organizations become service and social change organizations. The Security to Wellbeing Framework Practice Guide creates a pathway for service organizations to better understand their relationship with social change and their inherent power to transform their communities. Explore the Practice Guide.
Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies | The Economic State of Black Women in the United States
“Ultimately, researchers say closing the substantial gaps will require more than individual achievement alone and will instead depend on policies and workplace changes that better support Black women’s economic mobility. That includes expanding access to higher-paying jobs, strengthening pay equity protections, improving access to retirement benefits, and addressing the caregiving responsibilities that often interrupt career growth.
The report also stresses the need for stronger wealth-building opportunities, such as homeownership, fair lending practices, and employer benefits, that allow Black women not just to earn a living but to build real, long-term financial stability.”
