Social Media and Mental Wellness:  The Pros and Cons of Adolescents Using Technology

Social media is here to stay. It is the main form of communication for adolescent-aged youth, and it is constantly evolving to be more attractive, user friendly and harder to “live without.” The webinar will explore how various forms of social media from Tik Tok to Snap Chat to YouTube, affect both psychological and social development, as well as how it impacts the overall wellness of adolescent youth. Discussions will include exploring the benefits (pros) of using these platforms, such as feeling less isolated or discovering new ways to be creative. Discussions will also include the negatives in using these platforms such as cyber-bullying, sexting, glorification/advertising of substance use, as well as misinformation. Cross-platform use, such as x-box and FaceTime, will also be discussed.

This presentation is designed to provide parents and caregivers with up-to-date, non-biased information that will increase their knowledge base on the topic.
